Finding the Light

2013-07-18 20.25.41As I write this we are days away from the Winter Solstice, the darkest time of the year and when the sun is at its lowest point in the sky.  Not only that but the weather we are having at the moment seems particularly gloomy.  When I woke up this morning I really felt like I needed some light and without that much natural light I needed to do something to make me feel light, and that was to sing!  I have known for a while that singing makes me feel light and happy and is probably why I am drawn to kirtan so much.  It is just one of a number of ways that makes me feel light such as dancing, cooking, walking in nature, my yoga practice, flowers and creating something.  When we do something that makes us feel light we feel inspired, excited and it makes us come alive.  The quote on the front page of my website I chose because of this very theme ‘Don’t ask what the world needs, ask what makes you come alive and go do it.  Because what the world needs is for people who have come alive’.

It was a couple of years ago that I realised that my first name actually means ‘light’ and I have loved it ever since.  It was even more recently that I discovered that my middle name Elaine also means bright and shining so it seems I have no choice but to keep bringing the light in!  Through our yoga practice we can bring the light into our bodies in the form of pranic energy and get it flowing well to all areas.  What makes you feel light will be up to you and may be completely different to what makes me feel light.  It won’t be wrong, it is finding those things that make your heart sing and that you would happily leap out of bed for on a Sunday morning to do.

The Winter Solstice is a time when we celebrate the return of the light and with it new beginnings and aspirations.  So if everything seems dark at the moment keep looking for those chinks of light and let it come in and inspire you.
